Quebrada Tocome Urban Design Guideline

This course addresses topics pertinent to the Urbanism concentration, with an emphasis on applying research in discourses relevant to the concentration topic area. Contemporary theoretical and historical issues are addressed through reading discussions, presentations, writing assignments, and the application of this knowledge through the production of new visual and physical content. Courses are designed to run parallel with Studio 07, the final studio in the concentration curriculum.

This course introduces students to the spatial organization of the city and the ideas that shape its form. Using Caracas as the basic case study, the lectures will examine the key forces affecting the city’s history to its development, and how the city developed to what it is today. The ultimate goal is to investigate the relationship between the process and the results, setting the basis for a discussion about the future development of other cities. Each student will use traditional graphics, sketching, photography, and sophisticated analytical programs as tools for investigating urban and natural landscapes. Student’s readings, observations, and notes form the basis of discussions on built heritage, urban landscape, community identity, and sense of place, and how visual perception can inform design and planning. Each Tuesday, new material will be presented by the instructors or invited panelists, and on Thursdays, there will be workshops and practical exercises to develop the material of the week
